Local Projects Get Support from National and Synod Self-Development of People Committees
Four self-help programs in Michigan and Ohio have received a total of $50,000 from the two committees, who distribute money from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. The national committee approved grants totaling almost half a million dollars to 21 self-help projects in the United States. The Low-Income Tenant Union Project
Kalamazoo (Mich.) Homeless Action Network
This project will seek to empower a group of homeless people who are moving into private apartments to organize against housing discrimination, advocate for fair rental agreements and fight unfair evictions. $10,000 from the synod SDOP committee and $20,000 from the national SDOP committee.
Keep Receipt Program
People Rising Against Injustice Seek Equality, Redford, Michigan
This is a program to teach record keeping and good spending habits to low-income people so they can make the most of their resources and invest in their communities. $10,000 from the synod SDOP committee.
The Afrikan Business Entrepreneurship
Dayton, Ohio
This grant will enable a group of low-income immigrants to form a business cooperative to import authentic products from Africa and sell them locally. $20,000 from the national SDOP committee.
Benefit RIghts Advocacy Group
Cincinnati, Ohio
This grant will empower a group of economically poor people by enabling them to learn organizing and leadership skills, so they can contribute to making changes in county and state policies and laws. $20,000 from the national SDOP committee.
