Synod Assembly Highlights — March 17, 2018
Synod Commissioners gathered for their annual retreat at the Weber Center in Adrian, Michigan, March 15-16, 2018. New and returning commissioners were welcomed and introduced, and participated in a brief orientation on the mission of the synod, and training on boundaries. Rev. Dr. Christian Iosso facilitated a seminar on Just-Peace and led the discussion of the book he authored: Five Risks Presbyterians Must Take for Peace: Renewing the Commitment to Peacemaking in the PCUSA.
Following the retreat, the Synod Assembly convened on the 17th and discerned a number of action items including finalizing the committee structure for 2018 on the recommendation of the Committee on Representation and Inclusiveness (CORI) to insure diversity and efficiency.
Assembly approved a new covenant agreement with the Ohio Living (formerly the Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Service), and received a progress report regarding the three Presbyterian related universities.
The Assembly approved sending three overtures to the General Assembly this summer. They are on clarifying the position of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) regarding appropriate boundaries of religious liberty, affirming and celebrating the full dignity and humanity of people of all gender identities, and on celebrating the gifts of people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of the church.
Synod Assembly also approved a report to the 223rd General Assembly in the summer, and approved funding to help with the organizing of the Presbyterian Peace Network for Korea with the focus on just-peace in the Korean peninsula, and to co-sponsor a lunch presentation at the 223rd GA on Monday, June 18, 2018.
A reminder that the Mobile Health Fairs are being scheduled for this summer. Congregations interested in hosting free health fairs may contact the synod office or consult the synod’s website http://synodofthecovenant.org/synod-ministries/
This fall there will be mission partners from Pakistan and Bangladesh as part of the Mission to the USA program. This is the second year of a three-year focus on Muslim-Christian relations. We are still looking for host congregations.
