Using the writings and hymnody of Thomas Troeger (1945-2022), homiletician, author, poet, and musician, we will together explore the synergistic relationship between preaching and music. How do hymns do theology? How much interpretive work is possible within the limits of poetic expression? And how does any of this make for a more compelling and memorable sermon? In this workshop, with the aid of the Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God, we will engage these questions with liturgical curiosity.

Catherine E. Williams is the Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship, and Director of Chapel Worship at Lancaster Theological Seminary. She earned her PhD in Homiletics at Princeton Seminary, producing research on the homiletical value of the Trinidad & Tobago Calypso. Her forthcoming book, Preaching and Music: Powerful Partners in Proclamation will be published next spring by Cascade Books.
