Preaching in Lent presents an opportunity and a challenge:  the opportunity to use the traditional focus areas of repentance and spiritual disciplines to strengthen listeners’ faith, and the challenge of making a Lenten series compelling since it comes around with “disturbing regularity” (in the words of Fred Anderson).  This workshop will review dozens of ideas for Lenten preaching themes, as well as giving participants an opportunity to work in small groups on upcoming lectionary passages.  There will be plenty of opportunity for conversation and wisdom sharing.

Chip earned his Ph.D. in homiletics (preaching) at Princeton Theological Seminary, helping to teach courses in both Preaching and Worship. He has served as the regular preacher at churches in Bloomington, IL, and Lake Forest, IL. He is the former Director of Theology, Formation, and Evangelism for the Presbyterian Church (USA), and has served the Synod since April 2020.
