Synod Assembly Highlights November 2018


November 2-3, 2018

The Synod Assembly convened at Christ Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio, November 2-3, 2018. The Assembly elected and installed as Moderator the Rev. Dr. Aaron Meadows (Eastminster Presbytery), Vice Moderator the Rev. Dr. Pat Megregian (Mackinac Presbytery), and as President of the Board of Trustees the Rev. Rusty Cowden.

The Assembly’s first day focused on Christian-Muslim Relations with a seminar: “Christians and Muslims: Partners or Enemies?” The Seminar was led by Professor Dr. Bernard Adeney-Risakotta, founder of the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Dr. Farsajana Adeney-Riskotta, faculty member at the Duta Wacana Christian University in Indonesia. The insightful seminar also included the Synod’s 2018 Mission to the USA (MUSA) International Mission Partners: The Rev. Dr. Nosheen Khan, President of Gujranwala Presbyterian Seminary, The Rev. Dr. Saman Perera, Moderator of the Presbytery of Lanka, Sri Lanka, and The Rev. John Hira, Dean of St. Andrews Cathedral and Ecumenical Theological Seminary, Bangladesh

The 2019 MUSA program will continue to the focus on Christian-Muslim Relations and welcome IMPs from African countries with minority Christian populations.

The Assembly elected committees membership including the Self Development of Peoples, and a new roster for the Synod’s Cabinet on Ethnic Church Affairs.

The Grants and Scholarships Committee reported awarding 31 higher education scholarships and 6 seminary scholarships. The committee also awarded New Covenant Grants to seven projects and one Racial Ethnic Program Grant.

The Assembly approved the 2019 budget of $758,856, and voted to maintain the Synod’s $3.25 Per Capita for 2020. The Synod Per Capita has remains the same since 2011.

The Peacemaking and Justice Committee reported on awarding two congregations grants from the Synod’s newly reconfigured Welcome All Refugees initiative.

The next Assembly is scheduled for March 23, 2019 and will be preceded by a retreat for Synod Commissioners.
